Professional Tree TrimmingNevada & Placer County
ISA Certified Arborist-directed pruning that improves tree health, reduces hazards, and keeps your property defensible — throughout Nevada and Placer Counties.
Arborist-Directed Trimming — Not Just Cutting Branches
Proper tree trimming is one of the most impactful investments you can make in the long-term health and safety of your trees. When done correctly by an ISA Certified Arborist, pruning promotes strong structure, removes hazardous deadwood, improves light and air circulation through the canopy, and can significantly extend a tree's life.
Throughout Nevada and Placer Counties — including Grass Valley, Auburn, Nevada City, and surrounding communities — fire clearance pruning is equally critical. Cal Fire and local fire safe regulations require property owners to maintain defensible space, and proper tree trimming is a key part of meeting those requirements. David Powell understands the local fire risk environment and prunes with both tree health and fire safety in mind.
We follow ANSI A300 pruning standards — the industry benchmark for professional tree care — on every job. That means no topping, no flush cuts, and no practices that compromise your tree's long-term structural integrity. Good pruning shouldn't be visible; a well-trimmed tree should look natural, not hacked.

Pruning That Follows Science, Not Guesswork
Improper trimming damages or kills trees. Here's why our ANSI A300 approach protects your investment.
Tree Trimming & Pruning FAQs
Answers to the most common questions about tree trimming from Grass Valley and Auburn property owners.
Most mature trees benefit from a professional pruning assessment every 3–5 years. Young trees may need more frequent attention to establish good structure early. Trees with deadwood issues, storm damage, or those near structures should be assessed annually. Fire clearance pruning should be done at minimum annually before fire season — typically before June 1.
For most species, late fall through early spring (dormant season) is ideal — the tree is less susceptible to pest and disease entry, and it's easier to assess structure without leaves. That said, deadwood removal and safety pruning can be done any time of year. Oak trees in California should avoid pruning from February through June to reduce exposure to the beetle that spreads Sudden Oak Death.
Pruning costs depend on tree size, species, canopy density, and the type of work required. Small ornamental trees typically range $150–$400. Medium trees (30–50 ft) typically range $400–$900. Large or complex trees can run $1,000 or more. We provide detailed written estimates at no charge — contact us and we'll come out for a look.
Topping is the indiscriminate cutting of large branches to stubs — often done to reduce tree height quickly. It is one of the most harmful pruning practices: it causes decay, destroys natural form, and produces weak regrowth that is more hazardous than the original structure. We never top trees. If height reduction is your goal, we achieve it through proper crown reduction cuts that preserve the tree's biology and appearance.
Absolutely — this is one of our most common requests in Grass Valley, Auburn, and Nevada City. We're familiar with Cal Fire's Zone 1 (0–30 ft) and Zone 2 (30–100 ft) requirements for tree spacing, canopy clearance above rooflines, and limb height above ground. We can prune your trees to meet these requirements and provide documentation if needed for a fire inspection.
